Samaria gorge is the jewel of Crete! One of the biggest gorges in Europe, an official national park, and a must-see on your vacation in Chania. It has a length of 16 kilometers and untouched wilderness ready to amaze you. Alongside Imbros Gorge and Irini Gorge, are some of the most famous excursions in Chania. Tour starts from Omalos Plateau (Xiloskalo) at 1250 meters.
After a quick breakfast, we will start the 16 km length descent to Agia Roumeli Village. You will get the chance of admiring rare Cretan flora and fauna, and especially the endangered wild Cretan goat (Kri- Kri). There are lots of stops throughout the organized path with fresh spring water. The route is descending and the path although lengthy is well maintained. A half an hour break is suggested in the old Samaria settlement, about midway through the gorge. Hiking Boots, sunglasses, sunscreen, a quick snack, and plenty of water are needed.
The path till the end of the gorge and Agia Roumeli village lasts from 5 to 7 hours, and you will be rewarded with a refreshing swim in Libyan Sea waters. Taverns with traditional food will treat you to Cretan delicacies. In the early afternoon, we will take the boat to Chora Sfakion and then return to our hotel’s location, as Agia Roumeli is only accessible by sea. The bus will be waiting for you at the port for a careful return back.
The excursion is strenuous and enduring and is not recommended for people with disabilities, elderly, pregnant women.
